About World Made Visual

What the publication is, who is responsible for it, and how its visual stories are made.

World Made Visual is a publication about interesting questions that data can help answer. Each visual story takes one question, such as how far a salary goes in different places, and answers it with an interactive chart, findings checked against the data, a plain-language analysis, and the sources and method used.

Every story lives on its own permanent page, so you can read it, explore it, cite it, and come back to it when the data is updated.

Who is responsible

Gabe Petersen (editor and publisher). Gabe Petersen founded World Made Visual and is responsible for its editorial decisions. Each story's findings and interpretation are reviewed by Gabe before publication.

How stories are made

  1. A question first. Each story starts from a question readers are likely to ask, and a reliable public source that can answer it.
  2. Official data, versioned. Data is downloaded from the original publisher, checked for problems, and stored as a dated version. Pages show when the data describes, when the source released it, and when we retrieved it.
  3. Numbers from code. Every figure in a chart, table, or sentence is calculated by code from that stored version. If the data changes, the numbers change together, and the interpretation is reviewed again.
  4. Limits stated. Each story explains what the data cannot tell you, next to the result where it matters.
  5. Editorial review. The editor reviews each story's findings and interpretation before it is published.

Use of AI

Stories are produced with help from Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. It assists with finding sources, writing the code that processes data and draws charts, and drafting text. AI output is not treated as evidence: quantitative claims must come from code applied to the cited data, and the editor is responsible for what is published. When AI assistance mattered in a specific way to how a story was produced, the story says so.
